The Other F Word

November 23, 2009

If you’ve read anything about the new novel The Wife’s Tale by Lori Lansens then you might think you know where I’m going with my blog title. Actually, I started off reading about morbidly obese Mary Gooch and right away wanted to reference the word "fat" as another "f" word in society. As I read deeper into the novel I soon realized there was something far more insidious at play. Mary's problem isn't just food or being fat. More powerful than her insatiable appetite, there's another "f" word that controls her everyday thoughts. Instead of writing a typical book review I’ve come up with a poem to give you an idea of Mary’s journey. I hope it inspires you read the book to learn more about Mary who goes on a journey to find her husband but finds herself.

The Other “F” Word

Fear of people
Fear of being alone
Fear of venturing out of her comfort zone

Fear of success
Fear of failure
Fear of not fitting into the dress

Fear of the truth
Fear of lies
Fear of her rubbing thighs

Fears for her future
Fears from her past
Fears that her marriage won’t last

Fear of too much
Fear of too little
Fear of her husband’s carnal touch

Fear to fly
Fear to live
Fear of reaching for the sky

Fear of birth
Fear of death
Fear of owning her worth

Fear of fat
Fear of food
Fears much bigger than that

Lori Lansens was born in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. Interesting.. a book from a wife just as we reach the holidays. My in-laws are spread out over Canada.. My friends envy me for that. I will be spending the day with our babes and hubby home.. together.. will we survive that?

I love your poem. Such a creative way to review a book! I think all women can relate to a story about body image. I would love to read this book.

Fear that I cannot win this contest because you will not ship overseas. Fear that if I ask if it is not too much trouble to consider revising your shipping rules to allow foreigners to enter contests. Fear that I ask you to consider shipping to a family member in Canada who will then send the book to me. Fear to enter a contest when I never win. Fear...actually, if I was truly afraid, I don't know if I would have posted any of that! Cheers! Maybe I'm not as afraid as I think I am :-)

Hmmm... Food, Fat and Fear. The post-partum triad, no? Haven't read The Girls but have heard excellent things about it. To give me something to think about other than Food or my Fear of the 15lbs of Fat I gained when pregnant, I'd love a copy of the book.

Lori Lansens' book sounds mighty fearsome ;) I think I could learn a few pointers about expanding my perspective and breaking out of my comfort zones. Looks to be a good read.

Fear.. could fill a whole book stores on Fears of parents.
Danielle Christopher, Langley, BC

One of my favourite book titles is "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway." It's okay to feel fear, but then really think about it and then act differently. I'd love to read about how Mary deals with her fears.

Lori Lansens' books certainly make you think and get into the characters' heads. I loved both The Girls and Rush Home Road, and am looking forward to "getting to know" another strong, fascinating, multi-faceted woman in this novel.

Great post and review. Fear is one of the biggest factors that gets in the way of living our life to the fullest. Can't wait to read Lori's latest book. I'm sure many people, myself included, can relate to the struggle.
Laura, Kitchener, ON

So many people use food as a crutch to deal with problems in their life. When I was suffering through my unhappy marriage (I am now happily divorced and 60 lbs lighter), I'd eat because I was miserable. And I was miserable because of the weight. I look forward to reading this book!

Love it.. Poetry for moms!! But who has been looking in my diary?!?
